Mickens

He’ll undergo a second MRI this week. Rookie Derrick Straight should take over as New York’s nickel corner.

He should be back for the Jets third preseason game. New York has weak depth in the secondary.

With youngsters Justin Miller and Derrick Straight on the bench, the Jets had no more use for Mickens following Ty Law’s signing. He could hook up with Bill Parcells in Dallas. The Cowboys nearly traded for him earlier this off-season.

Mickens was released earlier this week when the Jets signed Ty Law.

With Daylon McCutcheon still out, the Browns were hurting for depth at cornerback. Mickens fits in well on Cleveland’s transitional roster. There just isn’t enough talent on the defense.

For a minute, we thought this was one of those one-day contracts so Mickens could retire in a Jets uniform. Then we noticed Mickens is only 33. If nothing else, Mickens has an inside track on one of those assistant coaching jobs Eric Mangini is handing out to their former players.

Mickens has barely been getting reps in practice. He’s currently fifth or sixth on the depth chart, and behind rookie Drew Coleman.

The Jets are thin in the secondary, but the positive play of rookie Derrick Straight should make Herm Edwards feel better.
