The most important and influential cultural force in the history of the city of Jacksonville has now spoken out on the second-most.
Johnny Van Zant, the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel that his hometown Jaguars should have done everything in their power to sign hometown boy Tim Tebow.
(You’ll now pardon me for 13 minutes while I fish out my lighter and cue up the live version of “Freebird”).
Van Zant’s reasoning for the move was as sound as you would expect.
“They would have filled the stadium with chicks alone,” Van Zant said with a laugh.
The idea of the Tebow faithful mingling with the Skynyrd crowd in the parking lot where they hold “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” boggles the mind. There would be mullets and WWJD bracelets. Water would be turned into Jack Daniels. And there would be a three-hour wait for a table at the Waffle House after the game.
