Without Jalen Hurts, Eagles hang onto 21-14 halftime lead

The Eagles ended the first half with three consecutive punts and a missed field goal . . . and without quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Hurts left with a concussion in the first quarter, taking a hit to the head from Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu that went unpenalized as Hurts helmet slammed into the turf. The Eagles lead 21-14.

The Eagles have outgained the Commanders 263 to 156, with Saquon Barkley rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 13. The team likely leans heavily on their star running back in the second half without Hurts.

Kenny Pickett is 8-of-11 for 84 yards with a touchdown and an interception after Hurts went 1-of-4 for 11 yards and ran for 41 yards on three carries. Brown has six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown.

The Eagles had a chance to push their lead to two scores when Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had a pass sail on him. The ball flew over the head of receiver Luke McCaffrey, giving C.J. Gardner-Johnson an easy interception. His 9-yard return gave the Eagles the ball at the Washington 48 with 1:44 left.

They drove to the Washington 38, where Jake Elliott’s 56-yard field goal try fell short.

Daniels has completed 8 of 15 passes for 108 yards with two touchdowns and the pick. He threw a 6-yard score to Jamison Crowder and a 32-yarder to Terry McLaurin. Dyami Brown has two catches for 49 yards and McLaurin three for 43.
