Reggie Bush’s big day against the Cardinals felt like a coming out party, but it’s easy to forget he’s had other big moments as a pro.
One memorable performance came last season against the Vikings on Monday Night Football. Bush returned two second half punts for touchdowns and had seven catches. Brad Childress was furious at the time that punter Chris Kluwe didn’t punt the ball out of bounds last year.
“If he can’t do that, I will find somebody who can kick the ball out of bounds,” Childress said.
Kluwe stuck around and Childress managed to smile when the incident was brought up this week.
“I think that we will go back and revisit our last trip we had to the dome and probably have a little sit down about that to see if either one of us has evolved in our processes in communicating that,” Childress said.
That doesn’t mean the Vikings will necessarily punt away from Bush this time. Their coverage units have improved from abysmal to solid.
“Obviously we had a history with Bush last year, but we’re a different unit than we were last year, too,” kicker Ryan Longwell said. “A lot quicker. Guys take a lot more pride in what they’re doing and it shows.”
In a game full of great storylines, we’ll be watching to see if Bush or Percy Harvin (on kickoffs) can break a long return.
