As a rookie, Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs spent most of his time playing the split end positions, also known as the “X” receiver, in the Minnesota offense. This year, Diggs will be mixing in heavy doses of “Y” and “Z”, too.
Matt Vensel of the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the Vikings are working on making Diggs more versatile in his second season, moving him around in order to find the best matchups.
Diggs is unfazed by the change. “I haven’t really been able to tell. I feel like I’m playing the same spot,” Diggs said, via Vensel, “To me, it really doesn’t matter where they line me up.”
Receivers coach George Stewart gave the former fifth-round high praise by comparing him to other receivers whose teams did all they could to get the ball in their hands.
“He is a playmaker and with playmakers like Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, Roddy White, you want to give them opportunities to make plays,” Stewart said. “And that’s what he’s doing.” (As Vensel points out, Stewart coached each of the men he named.)
Vensel says Diggs has been the most impressive offensive player so far this year for the Vikings. If he can continue on the trajectory that made him one of the steals of the draft a year ago, Diggs could be on the verge of becoming one of the best young receivers in the NFL.
