Now that players are through with their time off for the year, and into the routine of a preseason, the number of NFL arrests has declined sharply.
Well, except for Aldon Smith, anyway.
But even though the 49ers are in the top five, they’re not the most arrested team in the NFL lately.
According to data compiled by former San Jose Mercury News reporter Mike Rosenberg, the Vikings are leading the way with 18 arrests the last five years.
They’re followed by the Broncos (16), the Colts and Buccaneers (13 each) and the 49ers (12).
At the other end of the spectrum, the Texans come in last with just one, and they cut rookie defensive tackle Brandon Ivory within days of his arrest in Alabama.
The Chargers, Giants and Panthers are tied for next-to-last with three each, and the Dolphins and Saints are next with four. The Patriots are among the teams next with five, even though one of theirs was the double-murder conviction for former tight end Aaron Hernandez.
He points out that if you narrow the scope to the last year, the Colts lead the way with five. Since 2012, it’s the 49ers, while the Vikings reclaim the lead when you stretch the study out.
It’s hard to know what conclusions to draw from this list (he even notes there’s not a strong correlation between number of wins and record).
But he does add that Kenny Britt himself would be 20th on the list, and Smith and Ray McDonald alone would be tied for 23rd, though Britt’s the only one currently available to help add to a team’s total.
