With Chris Culliver lost for the season to a torn ACL, there’s an opportunity for other cornerbacks to earn more playing time in San Francisco.

One of the 49ers vying for those snaps is Nnamdi Asomugha, who signed a one-year deal with no guaranteed money with the 49ers after being released by the Eagles. With no guaranteed money, Asomugha isn’t guaranteed anything else and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said that his play in training camp thus far hasn’t done anything to change that situation.

“We really didn’t now what we were getting when we got Nnamdi,” Fangio said, via Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area. “He’s had some good days out here and some days when we weren’t sure if he’d be able to still have it. I think we’re kind of in between on him right now. Hopefully, he’ll still be able to have some gas left in his tank to go out there and play like he did prior to going to Philadelphia. So I think the jury is still out there.”

With the 49ers reportedly back in contact with Eric Wright, the depth chart could get even more crowded at cornerback in the coming days. Based on Fangio’s comments, it doesn’t sound like that would be a good thing for Asomugha’s chances of sticking with the 49ers unless the team starts seeing good days more consistently.
