The Texans started four different quarterbacks before their season ended with Saturday’s blowout loss to the Chiefs, but Tom Savage wasn’t one of the players to take a turn under center.
Savage spent the year on injured reserve after injuring his shoulder, barring him from a likely run with the first team as Houston waded through injuries and ineffectiveness with other quarterbacks. Savage said Sunday that he knows the team will likely be making moves at the position this offseason and deemed himself a contender for the job.
“They can draft 12 quarterbacks,” Savage said, via the team. “I am going to be ready to go. I am definitely excited about competing and that still falls under the category of controlling what I can control.”
Texans coach Bill O’Brien isn’t making any decisions at the position at this point, but said he liked the way Savage handled the injury in terms of staying on top of what was going on offensively while calling him “a talented guy that has a chance to play.” Whether it is Savage or someone else, O’Brien needs to find a better answer at quarterback in 2016 if the team is going to improve on this year’s results.
