The horrid Bears offensive line we witnessed for the first half of the season is gone. In its place is a competent group that has done a nice job run-blocking for Matt Forte and is no longer as vulnerable to the blitz as before.
The man responsible for all that in-season improvement is Mike Tice, the former Vikings head coach in his first season in Chicago.
“It’s one of the great coaching jobs I’ve seen, and it’s flown under the radar,” Tice’s former boss Brian Billick told Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times.
It’s been a nice career resurgence for Tice, who had been working under Jack Del Rio in Jacksonville before bolting this year. Jensen spoke about the possibility of Tice getting hired elsewhere on Tuesday’s PFT Live. That seems unlikely in the short term because there aren’t many jobs still available.
It’s also quite possible Tice still will be coaching up his once-overmatched troops for a few more weeks.
