We mentioned this week that the Panthers may retain the rights to linebacker Thomas Davis due to an arcane rule in the last CBA concerning players that were on the PUP list.

A lot depends on how the current work stoppage gets solved, but Davis believes he’ll be allowed to shop around as a free agent regardless.

“I will be allowed to test the free agent market,” Davis told Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald. “But my desire is to remain a Panther for the rest of my career.”

Gantt points out that agents and those on the management side are a little confused about what the rules would be. Perhaps the Panthers would allow him to test the market either way.

Coming off two torn ACLs in as many seasons, it seems likely the Panthers will value Davis more than any other team.
