Terrell Owens hasn’t appeared in an NFL regular-season game since 2010. At 39, getting another chance to play football at the highest level is far from assured.
That said, if an NFL team shows interest, Owens has indicated he will be ready.
In an interview with CSN Chicago’s David Kaplan on Friday, Owens said he’s “keeping myself in shape just for any opportunity that may come about.”
Owens also praised the coaching ability of Bears head coach Marc Trestman, who was the 49ers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1996 -- Owens’ rookie season in San Francisco.
“Coach Trestman has a great football mind and he will get the most out of the talent the Bears have.” Owens told Kaplan. “Guys like Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte will be even better playing for Coach Trestman.”
Owens, who is in Chicago for a charity basketball game on Saturday, also declared his interest in playing for the Bears -- an idea he said he got from a conversation with former Raiders, Vikings and Chiefs linebacker Napoleon Harris, now an Illinois state senator and Owens’ workout mate on Friday.
Said Owens: “I would definitely welcome it if they would give it some serious consideration.” He told CSN Chicago that a tandem that included him and Marshall would be “really dangerous.”
The Seahawks released Owens last August less than three weeks after signing him. Whether he catches on with another club remains to be seen, but he’s doing what he can to create interest -- and he’s apparently keeping up with his training.
