Robert Mathis figures to be the consolation prize to teams that lose in the Mario Williams sweepstakes in free agency this year. Of course, Mathis has to get to free agency first.
Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star reports that contract talks between Mathis and the Colts “are warming up considerably.”
We’re a little surprised. Paying a 31-year-old pass rusher huge money when the team is changing defensive schemes doesn’t make a ton of sense for a rebuilding club like the Colts.
This news indicates that the Colts are serious about keeping Mathis. If that’s the case, perhaps they will consider using the franchise tag on him.
The Titans and Falcons have been mentioned as potential landing spots for Mathis. The Seahawks would also make some sense.
