One of the best running backs ever to play in St. Louis may soon return to St. Louis as a running backs coach.

Stump Mitchell, a 1981 draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals who played for the franchise for nine years, interviewed for the Rams’ running backs coach vacancy on Monday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The 52-year-old Mitchell is currently the head coach at Southern University. Before taking that job he spent two seasons as assistant head coach and running backs coach with the Redskins, and eight seasons as running backs coach with the Seahawks.

As a player in St. Louis, Mitchell led the league in yards per carry once, led the league in kick return yards once and finished in the top 10 in the league in all-purpose yards four times.
