Stephen Jones: Other teams being interested in Mike McCarthy would be no surprise

There’s one game left on Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract and his future will be a top storyline coming out of Week 18.

Recent weeks have seen a lot of talk from the Cowboys that McCarthy could return for a sixth season, but McCarthy will be able to explore other options once his contract is up and this weekend brought reports that other teams are keeping tabs on his situation as they put together their lists of coaching candidates.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked about those reports during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Monday.

“It doesn’t surprise me a bit, Mike’s an established head coach in this league,” Jones said. “He’s won a Super Bowl and been to multiple championship games,”

Jones was also asked if the prospect of outside interest would impact their own decision-making process and said the team will “address all this after the Commanders game” next Sunday. McCarthy will likely be asked about his own timeline to address these matters in the coming days and both sides will have plenty to ponder.
