The Steelers activated cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the physically unable to perform list on Sunday, which clears the way for Porter to practice with the team and play in Week 1 even though he has not received the contract extension he’s been looking for all offseason.
There has been no sign that such a deal is imminent, but General Manager Omar Khan made it clear on Monday that the team is planning to have Porter on the practice field.
“Not just Joey but anyone we feel is healthy and available to us, we expect them to practice,” Khan said, via multiple reporters.
Khan confirmed that the Steelers will not budge from their organizational philosophy of cutting of contract talks at the start of the regular season and said that he still hopes “Joey finishes his career here” while declining to delve into any details of where things stand on the negotiating front.
