Shawne Merriman wins big judgment against Christian Laettner

Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman probably feels like a guy who just caught a three-quarter-court pass, dribbled once, spun around, and nailed a 15-foot jumper to win a basketball game.

A press release from EAG Sports Management declares that Merriman has been awarded nearly $4 million against former NBA players Christian Laettner and Brian Davis. Merriman, per the release, loaned the men $3 million in 2007 for their real estate business. In 2009, they defaulted, prompting a lawsuit.

A lawsuit that Merriman has won.

“Shawne Merriman trusted Laettner and Davis to repay the millions they borrowed from him for their businesses,” said Merriman’s lawyer, Marc Kasowitz. “During the past two years, they first denied they owed the money and then made false promises they would repay Shawne. We are pleased that the Federal Court has vindicated Shawne’s rights and is compelling Laettner and Davis to fulfill their obligations.”

Merriman recently signed a two-year contract with the Bills, which reportedly will pay him $2.5 million guaranteed. Though the $4 million from Laettner and Davis is now legally guaranteed, he may have a slightly harder time cashing in.
