Eagles running back Saquon Barkley became the ninth running back in NFL history to run for 1,000 yards in a season during Sunday’s win over the Cowboys and he put himself in reach of Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record.
Barkley ran for 167 yards and is now at 2,005 yards on the year. That leaves him 101 yards away from breaking the record Dickerson set in 1984, but there were questions about whether Barkley will be given the green light to go for it because the Eagles have already clinched the NFC East and the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Head coach Nick Sirianni said “we’ll see” when asked about Barkley playing during his postgame press conference. Barkley said he didn’t sign with the Eagles in order to break the rushing record, but acknowledged its significance while saying that he will be on board with any decision Sirianni makes.
“I would love to, but we have bigger things that we’re focused on. . . . It’s up to Nick. Whatever his decision is, I’m all for it,” Barkley said.
The Eagles will be facing the Giants and Barkley’s history with their NFC East rivals could wind up playing a role in the ultimate call about playing Barkley in Week 18.
