The New Orleans Saints lost a key member of the family earlier this year, when former defensive end Will Smith was shot and killed. The team will remember him in a significant way this season.
The Saints have announced that a decal bearing Smith’s number and name will be attached to the helmet of every player.
A first-round pick in 2004, Smith spent nine seasons with the Saints. He was a key member of the team’s defense during the 2009 championship season, a year in which he had a career-high 13.0 sacks.
The decal debut on Saturday night, for a game against the Texans in Houston.
