Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson deserves consideration for the league’s MVP award. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman would give the honor to another member of the team.
“Marshawn Lynch is playing MVP-caliber football,” Sherman said earlier this week, via the team’s official website. “I remember the last time a running back got it -- I think he had 2,000 yards and broke close to a record, but he also had 14 touchdowns, and Marshawn has 16 touchdowns. . . .
Sherman is referring to Vikings running back Adrian Peterson, who had 2,097 yards in 2012. Peterson actually had only 13 total touchdowns that year; 12 rushing and one receiving. Still, touchdowns scored won’t influence the MVP vote unless Lynch scores four or more on Sunday and pushes his total 20 or above.
For Peterson, the 2,097 rushing yards -- second in league history -- got him the award. With 1,246 rushing yards in 2014, Lynch currently is tied with 1975 Franco Harris for 243rd all time. So Lynch would need to have a pretty big day against the Rams to move the needle in that regard.
