Years prior to being charged with DUI manslaughter this week, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth was a participant in the NFL’s substance-abuse program and facing a suspension if he violated the drug policy again, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. According to a Philadelphia Inquirer report in 2007, Stallworth had drawn league scrutiny for a past violation of the drug policy. When asked about the report after signing with the New England Patriots in March 2007, Stallworth acknowledged that it was true. “All that stuff is in the past,” Stallworth said at the time. “There was a situation a couple years ago. There’s nothing now that’s going on that will affect me preparing for helping this team.” Stallworth is free on bail after being booked and processed Thursday in Miami. Of course, league discipline is the least of Stallworth’s worries at the moment as he contends with the legal process.
