When Bears coach John Fox discussed quarterback Jay Cutler’s injured right thumb on Tuesday, he said that the quarterback doesn’t need to have surgery right now and deemed the quarterback “day-to-day” when it came to how long he’d be out of the lineup.
Recent history with Bears injuries has shown that Fox is fond of using that description for most injuries that don’t reach the season-ending level, but a report from outside the organization suggests that it will be a little while before Cutler is back in the lineup.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Cutler is expected to miss two or three weeks as a result of the sprained thumb that forced him out of Monday’s loss to the Eagles. Rapoport adds that how Cutler’s thumb responds over the next few days will provide further information about how that timeline will set up.
Brian Hoyer will take over in the starting lineup until Cutler is ready to return. The Bears don’t have a third quarterback on the active roster, but former Eagle and Cardinal Matt Barkley is on the practice squad.
