The Bears lost wide receiver Marquess Wilson to a fractured clavicle this week, opening up a third receiver job that many in Chicago were excited to see Wilson fill this season.
There are several backup options on hand in Chicago, including the just signed Greg Herd, but the Bears have also reportedly surveyed the veteran market. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Bears worked out Santonio Holmes and Ben Obomanu, but that neither one is in the team’s plans at this point.
It’s the first sign of interest we’ve heard of since Holmes was released by the Jets this offseason, although Holmes said in June that he was confident that he’d find a job for the 2014 season and things seem to be heating up on other fronts as well. \
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also reports that Holmes has “drawn interest” from the Browns, which makes sense as they wait to hear the final ruling on Josh Gordon’s availability. Browns coach Mike Pettine saw the worst of Holmes during his time on Rex Ryan’s staff, but the need created by Gordon’s absence could outweigh those memories.
Obomanu also saw his last action with the Jets, playing three games and catching one pass for them in 2013. The longtime Seahawk has 88 career catches.
