Dolphins defensive end Jaelen Phillips suffered a non-contact Achilles injury at MetLife Stadium on Friday.
After the game, Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert shared his opinion on the matter.
“We’ve got to do something about this turf and this playing surface,” Mostert told reporters. “It just has to change.”
Although some would point out that Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered the same injury on the grass at Lambeau Field, there’s something different about artificial surfaces. They’re harder. They’re less forgiving. For some of these injuries, it seems to be far more likely that they’ll happen on turf than on grass.
Players want grass. There is no debate. The only issue is that the owners are too cheap to give them high-quality grass fields in every stadium.
And there’s nothing the players can do. Unless they plan to strike over it when the current labor deal expires.
Players aren’t inclined to give up game checks to get better working conditions. Until that changes, they’ll keep playing on turf surfaces.
