Patrick Chung’s second stint with the Patriots may turn out to be longer than his first.
Chung has signed a new deal with the Patriots that adds another year, and $5.7 million in new money, to his current contract, according to Field Yates of ESPN. The new deal keeps Chung under contract to the Patriots through 2018.
A 2009 second-round pick of the Patriots, Chung played his first four seasons in New England. He then signed with the Eagles in 2013, reuniting him with his Oregon coach Chip Kelly, but he was a disappointment in Philadelphia and was cut after one year. In 2014 Chung re-signed with the Patriots, then signed a new deal in 2015 and has now signed a new deal yet again in 2016.
Last year Chung started 14 games at safety and played 81 percent of the Patriots’ defensive snaps, as well as 48 percent of the Patriots’ special teams snaps.
