The Panthers have made a change to their cornerback group ahead of training camp.
The team announced Thursday that they have signed Leonard Johnson to their 90-man roster. Shaq Richardson was waived to make room for Johnson.
Johnson was waived by the Patriots in February after signing with them late last season and appearing in four regular season games. Johnson had 11 tackles and three passes defended in those games, but did not appear in either of New England’s playoff contests.
The Panthers have some familiarity with Johnson after facing him six times from 2012-2014 while Johnson was a member of the Buccaneers. He appeared in all 48 regular season games for the Bucs over those three years so his arrival gives some experience to a cornerback corps remaking itself in the wake of Josh Norman’s departure.
Richardson was a fifth-round pick of the Steelers in 2014, but has never played in the regular season.
