The Carolina Panthers announced Tuesday that they have released guard Travelle Wharton and re-signed guard Geoff Hangartner on Tuesday.

Per Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, releasing Wharton frees up more than $3.8 million in salary cap space. He was due a $5.7 million base salary and $7.6 million cap figure in 2012. (Wharton’s picture is in the upper right.)

Hangartner received a three-year deal, per Person. It’s is expected to be worth much less than Wharton’s now-terminated contract.

“It was an extremely difficult decision on Travelle,” said G.M. Marty Hurney.

Wharton is 31 years old, but he will generate some interest in free agency.
