One of Green Bay’s biggest heroes in last year’s Super Bowl will miss the rest of the 2011 season with a neck injury.
Coach Mike McCarthy announced Monday that safety Nick Collins would not play again this year. Collins hurt his neck against the Panthers, and stayed in Carolina overnight for further testing.
It’s a huge blow to the Green Bay secondary. Collins is a popular and consistent leader on the defense. He’s missed only three games since the Packers drafted him in 2005, including 55 straight starts through Sunday.
The Packers will look again to Charlie Peprah, who started for much of last year. McCarthy said it was too early to tell whether Collins’ injury could be career-threatening.
