It was an ugly football season for Cincinnati Bengals outspoken wide receiver Chad Ochocinco last year, something he readily admits. He caught only 53 passes for 540 yards and four touchdowns last season after averaging 92 receptions for 1,314 yards and nine touchdowns during the previous four seasons. And Ochocinco acknowledged during an interview Friday with the NFL Network, per Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer, that his preparation was far below his usual professional standard. Actually, it sounds like it was less than someone going out for the high school freshman football team. “I’m not even going to lie to you, I’m going to say it,” Ochocinco said. “Last year, the offseason, I didn’t lift one weight, I didn’t run one route, I didn’t exercise. I didn’t do nothing because my focus was on getting out of a situation I didn’t want to be in. I’m not going to lie. “And the result of my season, whether we as a team did bad or not, that’s what I get. I get hurt in the preseason. I didn’t lift no weights. If I had been on my right regimen, I guarantee you my collarbone, my shoulder wouldn’t pop out of place. The ankle surgery, you know.” Of course when it comes to Ochocinco, there’s almost always more to it than his physical condition. Ochocinco said that his bad attitude had a negative effect on his mindset for the game. “I talked to a lot of different people and at that time when I was in shambles or disgruntled, a word a lot of people like to use, I wasn’t listening to any of the information I was getting that was positive,” Ochocinco said. “I went on a rant on my own and was really fussing about things that were out of my control.” Ochocinco reiterated that he will attend a mandatory minicamp later this month and emphasized that he’s on good terms with quarterback Carson Palmer.
