NFL rules forced Saquon Barkley to sell his interest in Polymarket

When it comes to the gold rush of sports betting and prediction markets, player investment continues to be the forbidden fruit.

Via Front Office Sports, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said he was forced to sell his stake in Polymarket, one of the leading prediction-market brands.

“I am not in that right now,” Barkley told FOS. “I am not allowed to be in that.”

Barkley previously held equity in the company.

“I kinda had to get out of that,” Barkley said. “I was in it before, but no bueno.”

The NFL has previously explained to PFT that team owners are permitted to own up to five percent of any company that operates a sportsbook, as long as the owner isn’t involved in managing the wagering operation. The NFL, however, won’t disclose which owners own how much of which company.

We’ve asked about the rules applicable to owners holding an ownership stake in prediction markets. If permitted, it’s another example of the league’s “do as we say, not as we profit from” attitude when it comes to speculation on sports.
