New estimates put new Falcons stadium at $1.4 billion

Man, even with Cyber Monday, $1.2 billion doesn’t buy you what it used to.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Falcons will tell the Georgia World Congress Center Authority today that their new stadium is going to cost an extra $200 million, up to $1.4 billion.

The initial estimates were for the new retractable-roof stadium near the site of the Georgia Dome to cost $1 billion, but that was before an earlier $200 million bump.

Boy, they better hurry and build that sucker, before it gets any more expensive.

According to the report, the Falcons will put the “hard costs” of the building at $1.078 billion, with the rest in contingency funds and soft costs.

While that extra burden wouldn’t cost taxpayers any additional money, it could result in the need for a naming rights deal or possibly personal seat licenses.
