Mike Pouncey’s goals: Play center, get selected higher than his brother

The comparisons are inevitable: Mike Pouncey looks exactly like his brother Maurkice if you forget about the tattoos.

Their style of play isn’t as similar -- depending on who you ask. Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports says Mike Pouncey is more of a piledriving guard than Maurkice, with unique power. Maurkice is more of a technician that seems to better handle the intricacies of the center position.

Mike doesn’t see it that way. He said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine that he wants to play center at the next level. And he thinks he’s a lot like his twin brother.

“I think I block in the open field better, but like I said we’re the same player,” Pouncey said during an entertaining media session.

His goal is to get taken higher than No. 18 in the draft (where Maurkice was taken) or he’ll never hear the end of it. That goal seems rather high, but Mike says a few teams have told him he’s a better prospect than Maurkice. Most draft analysts disagree.

Pouncey confirmed he has met with Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh here. He’ll participate in all drills except for lifting and said that skipping the Senior Bowl was a “business decision.”

Steelers fans hoping for a Pouncey brothers combo platter shouldn’t get their hopes up yet, according to Mike.

“It’s not looking too good. But there’s free agency in the NFL.”
