Mike Munchak: “We didn’t play well, but we weren’t quitting”

Titans coach Mike Munchak is bristling at suggestions that his players quit during their 41-7 loss to the Texans on Sunday.

“If we thought guys weren’t playing hard, then we wouldn’t have them out there playing,” Munchak said on Monday. “If we saw someone that was going through the motions, or we feel wasn’t playing to win, then they shouldn’t be on the field. But I didn’t see that. We didn’t play well, but we weren’t quitting.”

But the Titans sure didn’t look like they were playing hard. As NBC’s Rodney Harrison put it, “They quit. You’re playing for first place in the division, a home game, and they gave up 41 points. They quit.”

It’s hard not to draw the conclusion that the Titans weren’t playing hard on a day that they were minus-2 in turnover ratio and were outgained 518 yards to 148. If the Titans were playing hard and still played as badly as they did on Sunday, maybe Munchak is right and they didn’t quit. Maybe they’re just not very good.
