Apparently, Mike Martz would cherish the opportunity to return to work for the St. Louis Rams. Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Martz is willing to become the offensive coordinator, again, of the Rams, if the new coach wants him. Specifically, if Jim Haslett is the new coach. “He’s the only guy that I would consider [working for],” said Martz, the former Rams coach, Lions offensive coordinator, and 49ers offensive coordinator. “I think the world of him. I think he’s an outstanding head coach.” And this, friends, is the sound of a guy who knows that his chances of continuing to be employed by an NFL team are evaporating faster than a shallow puddle of vodka on a Hawaiian beach. In 2001, Haslett described Martz’s offense as relying on “bullshit plays.” Now says Martz of Haslett: “He’s a proven winner as a head coach,” Martz said. “It’d be an honor to work with him.” Wow. Regardless of whether Haslett would be willing to embrace Martz (and to ever turn his back on him), the organization might feel a bit differently. Despite the fact that Jay Zygmunt is gone and John Shaw has been rendered far less relevant, Martz was despised by plenty of folks in that organization. Unless and until the team is sold, we can’t imagine Martz ever getting a chance to work for that specific team again.
