Mike LaFleur: I know Carson Beck is prepared to go in if need be

Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck has earned a promotion.

While Beck won’t be starting this week, the quarterback shuffle stemming from Gardner Minshew’s performance in Sunday’s win over the Cowboys has elevated Beck from No. 3 to No. 2 on the team’s depth chart.

Former starter Jacoby Brissett is now the No. 3 behind Beck, making him an obvious trade candidate.

How did Beck earn his new role?

“Obviously it’s just behind the scenes,” head coach Mike LaFleur said in his Monday press conference. “Nothing that you guys see, but I know he’s prepared to go in there if need be. Again, just like Gardner, just like anyone that you ask that’s going to be on this team, they’re prepared as if they’re going to be the starting quarterback, or they’re prepared if they have to go in. I know that he has [a] full grasp of this game plan, [and] of this system.

“It’s no secret, obviously, if something were to happen, it’d be nice to know what we have right there. I feel really good about where he is with his development, so if that were to come up, then obviously he’d be the next one in.”

Beck had an impressive preseason debut in the Hall of Fame Game back in August. But he suffered a rib injury in that game that sidelined him for the rest of the exhibition contests that month. He has also recently dealt with a back issue.

After Beck was selected in the third round of this year’s draft, it seems likely that his time to start for Arizona could be coming sooner rather than later — unless Minshew Mania leads the Cardinals to a long string of victories.
