Max Unger expected to miss 3-4 weeks with high-ankle sprain

The Seattle Seahawks will likely be without starting center Max Unger for most of the next month after suffering a high-ankle sprain against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Unger had just returned to the lineup the previous week against the New York Giants after missing four games with a sprained foot.

Unger got rolled up on from behind and had to be carted from the field in Kansas City on Sunday. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday suffered a high-ankle sprain and twisted his knee on the play. The knee injury doesn’t appear to be as problematic as the ankle injury at this point but Unger is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

“We have to wait and see how he responds. High ankle sprains are all different,” Carroll said. "...Max hasn’t had one of these before so it’s the first time through it and he’ll have to figure it out as we go. It’s a second degree sprain so it’s legit and we have to take care of him.”

Seattle will have to add another center to their roster. Patrick Lewis is currently the only healthy center on the team.

The Seahawks could bring back a familiar face in Lemuel Jeanpierre to fill the void.

Seattle placed Jeanpierre on injured reserve with a neck injury in September and released him with an injury settlement. Due to league rules, Jeanpierre wasn’t eligible to re-sign with the Seahawks until this week. He’s been a free agent to the rest of the league for the last six weeks and has been on at least four visits to other teams.

Jeanpierre had served as Unger’s backup the last three seasons and started eight games over that span.
