I was always the kid that ran the big NCAA tournament pool, dating back to middle school. (Five years ago.)
One thing I learned in all those years: The less you know about basketball, the better you do. Girls that weren’t sports fans inevitably won the pool each year.
This is why the story of Henry Hasselbeck does not surprise me.
Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times notes that Matt Hasselbeck’s five-year old son currently has the 103rd best NCAA tournament bracket entry on ESPN.com. Out of 5.9 million entries.
Henry’s method of picking teams: He usually picks the mascot he likes better.
Meanwhile, his dad isn’t even in the top half of all entries. Clearly Henry’s prediction genes didn’t come from his father’s side of the family.
