Marquez Valdes-Scantling: Appreciate criticism and support, I’ll be better

Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling had a chance to put the Chiefs back in the lead in the fourth quarter of Monday night’s game against the Eagles, but he couldn’t hold onto a deep pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

That drop was not the only one that a Chiefs receiver made during the 21-17 loss, but it was the most visible illustration of the difficulties the Chiefs had with making plays in the second half against the Eagles. It was also an illustration of the ongoing issues that the Chiefs have had with their wide receiver group this season.

Valdes-Scantling didn’t address that or the drop on Monday night, but he did go on social media to send a message about where his head is after the missed opportunity.

“I’m grateful, I’ll be better,” Valdes-Scantling wrote. “And I appreciate the criticism and the support. God put this on me because he knew I could handle it. Gratitude for everything that comes with it.”

Mahomes didn’t throw his receivers under the bus after the loss as he said “a lot of stuff that happened” over the course of the evening and that he “didn’t make good enough passes in certain situations.” That hasn’t been the universal reaction to what’s been holding the Chiefs back offensively, but the team isn’t pointing fingers as they try to get back onto better footing.
