Marcus Vick had plenty of football talent; his NFL career nevertheless was extremely limited.
But Marcus, via his off-field issues and his connection to Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, remains on the fringes of pro football. Especially when Marcus says or does something noteworthy.
Marcus did it again today, during the prosecution’s closing arguments in the George Zimmerman murder trial.
“Zimmerman better get 30+ years in prison,” Marcus Vick said via Twitter. “If my brother had to do 2 years it’s a must. Not self defense when u chase down an innocent kid.”
A fair point. Not too outlandish. Then came the next one.
“He could’ve fired warning shots!!! I hope the homies in the BIG house go bananas on his racist ass.”
Warning shots would have still put bullets in to the air; who knows where they would have ended up? And hoping that Zimmerman, who claims he killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self defense, suffers violence if he’s in prison strays well beyond the limits of the criminal justice system.
Marcus had one more: “A dogs life means more than a humans? Or a black person life huh?”
Somewhere, Mike Vick is cringing at that one. As he should. Though Mike Vick has done a good job of keeping Marcus at arm’s length, the last thing Mike Vick needs as he prepares to try to keep what could be his last NFL starting job is Marcus stirring up topics and issues that won’t do anything to help Mike Vick accomplish his current goals.
The broader point is that plenty of people who think they know everything there is to know about the case but who haven’t studied it or watched the trial will react to the verdict, whatever it may be. Indeed, people like Marcus Vick are reacting even before the verdict has been reached.
