With a three-day negotiating window opening up Saturday, it’s going to be hard to keep players from at least dipping their toes in the free agency waters in hopes of getting bowled over by a deal from a new team.
The Chargers would like to keep guard Louis Vasquez from jumping to another team as a free agent, for example, but it doesn’t look like they are going to be able to do that by signing him before he’s able to see what other teams are willing to offer. Vasquez’s agent Rob Sheets told the Indianapolis Star that his client knows what the Chargers would like, but that he islooking forward to hearing what teams outside of San Diego will be offering to get him to switch uniforms.
“The interest is genuine,” Sheets said. “At the same time, I have a client who wants to test the market. The Chargers had a chance to get something done last November. Now, Lou wants to explore every option.”
As you might have guessed from the location of the comments, the Colts are one of the teams that are expected to be bidding on Vasquez’s services. Sheets said that he “definitely” expects to hear from the Colts on Saturday. They likely won’t be the only ones putting in a call to gauge where PFT‘s 50th-ranked free agent is thinking about signing this offseason.
