In 2012, Buccaneers running back Doug Martin took the league by storm as a rookie -- and along the way he acquired one of the more popular NFL nicknames in recent years: The Muscle Hamster.
But there was one problem with that name. Martin hates it.
“You just don’t think of, you know, that’s something to be, you know, intimidating or anything,” Martin told PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio earlier this week, on the heels of a three-touchdown performance against the Jaguars.
“It’s a hamster, c’mon now,” Martin said.
So how about coming up with a new nickname?
“I can’t come up with my own nickname all I can say is that I despise that nickname,” Martin said. “You know, some people like it. Some people hate it. I hate it but it hasn’t gone away. I’m still waiting for that new nickname, for a new nickname to emerge.”
So then I had an idea. I’ll ask you, PFT Planet, for some ideas.
“We’ve already tried that,” Martin said of the possibility of having a fan-generated nickname. “It’s just lingering now.”
Prove him wrong, PFT Planet. Prove him wrong.
