The Jets plan to have running back LaDainian Tomlinson on the roster next season. They aren’t expected to give him 271 touches again, though, because of the presence of Shonn Greene and Joe McKnight.

Tomlinson says he hasn’t heard from the team at all since the end of the season, but he’ll deal with a reduced role if asked.

“I’m under contract. If that’s the way they see it, I have to make that the best possible role that can be made,” Tomlinson told Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. “I’d just play my role and try to be a best third-down back there is.”

Tomlinson would make a good one at a decent price ($2.425 million). He caught 52 passes last year and remains reliable as a pass protector. His production dipped dramatically in the second half of the 2010 season on the ground.

By reducing Tomlinson’s carries on early downs, the Jets can probably get more out of him per play.
