The Steelers posted their most yards since late in the 2018 season during last Sunday’s win over the Bengals, but their offensive effort didn’t get uniformly positive reviews in the wake of their first game since firing offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
Sixteen points were the result of all that movement up and down the field, which may have been enough to overcome the Jake Browning-led Bengals but isn’t enough to guarantee victory on a weekly basis. That’s why quarterback Kenny Pickett said on Wednesday that he “definitely liked our performance” against Cincinnati before noting that “yards are great, but points win you games.”
“The chunk plays were there,” Pickett said, via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “We had some really good drives working on some long fields. We had some penalties and bad plays take us out of that rhythm. We get rid of that, the points should come. . . . It’s game planning, the coverage, having the right call at the right time, getting them into those coverages and the shots we want to take versus the looks we’re seeing. We had them, which is great. It all works together. The protection was great, guys were getting open, I was making the throws. I want to continue having that great prep. It all happens during the week.”
The Cardinals are coming to Pittsburgh this Sunday and their 31st-ranked defense should offer the Steelers more chances to get right offensively.
