Cowboys nose tackle Josh Brent initially was released after being charged with intoxication manslaughter on $500,000 bail. According to the Associated Press, a judge has slashed the amount by 80 percent.
Brent’s bail is now $100,000. A judge also prohibited Brent from drinking alcohol and from driving without a valid license. His driver’s license had been suspended prior to the accident that claimed the life of teammate Jerry Brown.
A prosecutor agreed with Brent’s lawyer that the bond initially was set too high.
''We want to treat everyone the same,’' Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins said. ''Just because he’s a Cowboy doesn’t mean his bond should be $500,000.’'
''It was off the charts, it was inappropriate,’' said Brent’s lawyer, George Milner. ''And Mr. Brent should be treated like any other citizen of Dallas County.’'
Brent also will be required to wear a monitor that will detect whether he has consumed alcohol. Prosecutors hope to present the case to a grand jury before the end of the year. Given that Brent’s blood-alcohol level reportedly was 0.18 percent (more than twice the legal limit), an indictment is likely.
