At a time when it’s easy to negotiate rookie contracts (except in round three, apparently), Bosa has opted to boycott the team’s mandatory minicamp because he has yet to agree to terms.
Every unsigned draft pick should do it. Otherwise, the unsigned draft picks are working for free.
Yes, unsigned draft picks can (and do) sign letters of protection that guarantee they’ll get the money they would have made this year if they get injured. But with these deals getting done much more quickly under a rookie wage scale that arrived in 2011, why should any player report for work without a contract that is signed, sealed, and delivered?
Bosa is one of the only unsigned first-round picks to skip an offseason workout since former Chargers pass rusher Shawne Merriman stayed away from the entire offseason program after being selected in the first round of the 2005 draft. Every player should do it; if they did, every player would be signed before missing a single offseason workout.
