The Jets and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick continue to find agreement in their disagreement.
With Fitzpatrick reportedly now willing to take $12 million for one year, the Jets reportedly aren’t willing to pay it. That’s the word from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
It’s no surprise. The pending three-year offer that would pay Fitzpatrick $12 million in the first year has two extra years attached to it in order to lessen the 2016 cap charge for one of the few teams that currently has cap issues. If, for example, the pending offer from the Jets includes a $9 million signing bonus and a $3 million salary in 2016, Fitzpatrick would count only $6 million against the cap this season. Under his proposed one-year contract, the cap hit becomes $12 million.
Meanwhile, it’s safe to say that Fitzpatrick would gladly take a one-year, $12 million offer from another team. But no one has offered or will offer him that kind of money, proving yet again that he wants the Jets to pay him more than his actual market value.
The bigger question is whether $12 million is Fitzpatrick’s bottom-line position or his opener. If it’s the latter, the question becomes whether what he’d take and what the team would pay on a one-year deal will intersect.
