The Jets are conducting a workout with free agent placekicker Billy Cundiff, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Monday.
Per Schefter, the Jets want to improve the contenders for incumbent Nick Folk.
Cundiff, 33, is one of the most skilled kickers available. His leg strength is a major asset, with more than half of his kickoffs going for touchbacks in the last three seasons. That said, his accuracy was lacking in 2012. He connected on just 7-of-12 field goals in five regular-season games for Washington before being released.
Cundiff later had a playoff stint with the 49ers as insurance for struggling David Akers, but Cundiff didn’t attempt a postseason kick.
Cundiff’s best season came in 2010 for Baltimore, when he hit 26-of-29 field goals. However, he missed a short field goal in the waning moments of the 2011 AFC title game. The following offseason, the Ravens brought in rookie Justin Tucker, who beat out Cundiff for the job.
When in top form, Cundiff is surely one of the NFL’s 32 best placekickers, and it will be interesting to see if he can recapture that form, whether in New York or elsewhere.
