The Jets have nothing left to play for this season, but they moved to add a defensive lineman to the roster on Monday who could help them in the future.
According to multiple reports, they have claimed former Commanders defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis off of waivers. The Commanders cut Mathis on Saturday to make room for Jonathan Allen’s return from injured reserve.
Mathis was a second-round pick in 2022, but missed all but one game of his rookie season with a knee injury. He appeared in 22 games the last two seasons and had 25 tackles, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery.
Mathis is under contract through 2025, so he could factor into the Jets’ plans although those plans will be subject to change once they hire a new head coach and General Manager in the coming weeks.
