When the Cowboys were on a five-game losing streak earlier this year, owner Jerry Jones was adamant that the team wouldn’t consider making an in-season coaching change and the last few weeks have case doubt about whether he’ll be making one after the season.
After the Cowboys ended their losing streak, Jones said it wasn’t crazy to think that head coach Mike McCarthy could get a contract extension and winning two of their next three games hasn’t done anything to dim his view of the job McCarthy is doing. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Jones said that McCarthy “has shown that his team can handle adversity.”
Jones also said he thinks “you’re beginning to see some of the best” of defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and said he feels the two coaches are tied together.
“I give them both high grades this year,” Jones said, via Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
With no contract in place for 2025, McCarthy can explore other options come the end of the season so Jones will have to decide what kind of offer those high marks merit before the coaching carousel really starts to spin.
