Chants calling for the Patriots to fire head coach Jerod Mayo could be heard at Gillette Stadium during Saturday’s loss to the Chargers and Mayo fielded a question about his future with the team during a Monday press conference.
Mayo was anointed as Bill Belichick’s successor by team owner Robert Kraft before the former coach left the organization, so there was little thought that he might up being ousted after one season. A 3-13 start and a handful of off-field errors have created some doubt about Mayo and the coach was asked on Monday if he has been giving assurance from ownership that he will get a second year.
“I’m always in constant communication with ownership, and feel like we’re still on the same page,” Mayo said.
We’ll find out if everyone in New England is still on board with the same plan in the next couple of weeks and, assuming he’s back, it seems clear that Mayo will need to make a big step forward in 2025 if he’s going to have an extended stay on the sideline.
