Linebacker James Laurinaitis hasn’t met with any other teams since being released by the Rams earlier this month, but that appears set to change on Tuesday.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Laurinaitis will travel to New Orleans on Monday night ahead of a Tuesday visit with the Saints. The Saints’ interest in bringing Laurinaitis in for a meeting was first reported over the weekend.
The Saints cleared a bit more room under the cap to use for Laurinaitis or anyone else they may have their eye on by releasing wide receiver Marques Colston on Monday. They’re also confident about the chances of reaching an extension with quarterback Drew Brees that will slash his current $30 million cap hit and coach Sean Payton said the team’s focus at the moment is on improving the defense.
The Saints drafted Stephone Anthony and Hau’oli Kikaha in the first two rounds of last year’s draft and held onto Dannell Ellerbe after reworking his contract, so the cupboard won’t be bare in the event they don’t sign Laurinaitis, PFT’s No. 65 free agent, during his visit.
